Customer Challenge

Secondary hot water loop inefficiency and excessive heat loss

The 5 Star Cromlix House Hotel faced challenges with their secondary hot water loop, where a continuously running bronze pump circulated hot water to all taps and showers, resulting in substantial heat loss through the pipework and increased boiler activity to compensate for heat stripped from the hot water tanks.

Solution

Commercial Circo Genie

To address these inefficiencies, a Commercial Circo Genie was retrofitted onto the secondary hot water system. Much like in the Code Hostel case, the Circo Genie’s built-in trial alternated between active and bypass modes over a ten-day period, delivering precise thermostatic control of both the pump and the heat leaving the hot water tank. This approach aligns with the L8 primary method, ensuring safe water temperatures and helping to mitigate the risk of Legionella.

Results

Data gathered during the trial at Cromlix House Hotel revealed a substantial 38% reduction in energy consumption by the bronze pump, which typically uses 150 watts per hour (amounting to 3.6 kW daily). Furthermore, the heating valve on tank 3, managed by its thermostat, required heat 41% less frequently in active mode compared to bypass, indicating significantly lower demand on the four boilers. These outcomes point to notable energy savings and enhanced efficiency in hot water production and storage.

In summary, the case study at Cromlix House Hotel highlights the considerable advantages of integrating the Commercial Circo Genie into secondary hot water loops. This innovative solution demonstrates a clear potential to drive energy efficiency and cost savings in commercial hot water systems, echoing results seen in similar hospitality settings.
