Delivering warmer classrooms, a fully operational therapy pool, and a 24% reduction in energy use

North Lanarkshire Council needed a cost‑effective way to cut energy use and support its 2045 Net Zero target. Glencryan a Special Needs School in Cumbernauld was selected for a Hydro Genie® pilot due to its high heating demand and the importance of its therapy pool for the pupils.

The Solution:

150mm Platinum Hydro Genie System

A bespoke 150 mm Platinum Hydro Genie® System with bypass assemblies were installed over five days on the existing gas heating header (flow and return).

The system was designed to:

  • Improve heat transfer across the building
  • Offset heat lost through open‑window ventilation
  • Heat the therapy pool faster and more consistently
  • Reduce gas use without increasing boiler output
  • Support the council’s Net Zero strategy

Hydro Genie® enhances the thermal performance of existing heating systems using applied physics, fluid dynamics and electronic control.

We could never get the pool above 23°C which was quite chilly for the children. After being switched off for the weekend, it would take three days to get back up to temperature.

Therapy Pool

From a four-day warm-up to just a few hours

Before:

  • Heating restarted Monday; pool often didn’t reach 32°C until Thursday
  • Only one usable day each week
  • Lost therapy time for pupils

After:

  • Pool reaches full temperature by 1pm on Monday
  • Consistent warmth and full weekly availability
  • Staff report major improvements in classroom comfort

Heating Classrooms

Even with windows open

Before:

  • Before installation, teachers frequently reported cold rooms to the head teacher.

After:

  • No cold‑classroom complaints
  • Stable, even heat across the building
  • A noticeably more comfortable environment for pupils and staff

Results

With windows open while heating the pool

  • 24% Reduction in Gas Consumption
  • Before Hydro Genie® (2018–19): 710,645 kWh
  • After Hydro Genie® (2020–21): 540,701 kWh
  • A reduction of 169,944 kWh
  • A verified 24% reduction in gas use, achieved even under strict COVID ventilation rules.
  • This also delivered a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions of 31 Tonnes.
Staff have noticed an improvement in temperature across different areas in the school. We have also noticed an improvement in our swimming pool’s temperature which this new system is heating incredibly faster.
