Transforming a failing Renault Trafic into a high‑performance, low‑emission workhorse
Transforming a failing Renault Trafic into a high‑performance, low‑emission workhorse
CASE STUDY | Hybrid Genie™
Hybrid Genie™
Two years ago, my 56-plate Renault Trafic SWB failed its MOT emissions test, recording levels well above the legal limit. Faced with the prospect of expensive repairs, or even retiring the van altogether, I decided to install the Hybrid Genie™ oxyhydrogen system to see whether it could truly deliver on its promises.

Hybrid Genie™ Onboard Electrolyser System – not classed as a modification.
How Hybrid Genie™ Works
Hybrid Genie™ is an oxyhydrogen system that helps engines burn cleaner and extract more energy from every litre of diesel, without modifying the engine.
Using electrolysis, the system produces a controlled 2:1 mix of hydrogen and oxygen (oxyhydrogen) and feeds it into the air intake. This acts as a combustion catalyst, enabling a more complete burn providing more usable power from the same fuel.
Installation & Initial Testing
After installation, I carried out a short test drive and immediately noticed changes in the way the van performed. The engine, previously quite noisy, appeared to run more smoothly and felt noticeably more responsive.
Following this, the van was retested for its MOT emissions and passed with flying colours!
Long-Term Results
Over the following years, the Hybrid Genie™ system continued to deliver positive results.
Fuel Economy
- Before installation: approximately 375 miles per 80L tank
- After installation: approximately 520 miles per tank
This represents a fuel‑efficiency increase of approximately 38%, consistent across both short urban trips and long‑distance journeys.
Engine Performance & Reliability
Even from 92,000 miles to 108,684 miles with continuous use over three years:
- No noticeable oil consumption
- Improved drivability and throttle response
- Smoother engine operation
- No maintenance required on the electrolyser system
- Less than 5 litres of water used in total
Emissions Performance
At its most recent MOT, the van recorded 0.13 m-1, effectively zero smoke. An exceptional result for a diesel van of this age and mileage.
Even after years of operation, the vehicle continued to perform strongly with improved responsiveness and clean emissions results.
Transferability and Long-Term Value
At the end of November 2025, the van’s timing belt failed and the vehicle was retired. However, one of the key advantages of Hybrid Genie™ is its portability. The system was removed and installed into my next van, where it continues to deliver the same benefits.
Hybrid Genie™ is a transferable asset that can be moved between vehicles, helping protect and extend the owner’s investment.
Hybrid Genie™
Hybrid Genie™ is designed to support cleaner combustion, improved engine efficiency, and reduced emissions in Diesel, Petrol, and LPG engines – without engine modification.
- Improved fuel economy
- Reduced visible emissions
- Smoother engine performance
- Minimal maintenance requirements
- Full transferability between vehicles
The system is particularly effective in vehicles and machinery that operate regularly, carry load, or consume significant amounts of fuel.
Hybrid Genie™ is suitable for:
- Vans and commercial vehicles
- Trucks and HGVs
- Buses and coaches
- Plant and construction machinery
- Agricultural equipment
- Marine engines
- Passenger vehicles
- Static and industrial engines
For businesses, Smart Genie™ Lease options allow systems to be retrofitted with no upfront capital cost, helping fleets improve operational efficiency and reduce running costs.
