Hydro-Genie Trial
Comparisons of energy use before and after the installation of the Hydro-Genie System
Dr Chris Harrison, Data Scientist – 4th September 2020
Background
The Energy Systems Catapult’s Living Lab is a UK Government backed programme providing a mass, domestic house test environment for energy saving products. The Lab’s 100 homes have had their energy consumption monitored for the last three years.
Trial
Four Living Lab homes in Newcastle were used to carry out energy-saving trials on the 22mm Platinum Hydro-Genie System. For this trial, the system was installed in owner-occupied properties with gas boilers in March 2020. All these homes were equipped with room-by-room zonal heating control system and data collection from the gas meters. The gas used after installation is compared with that used earlier in 2020 and in the previous year.
Average saving on heating costs and CO2 emissions of 34.75%
Figure 1 – Comparison of the average (mean) gas use before installation in January/February 2020 and just after install in March/April 2020.
Gas use reduced for all four homes by 22% to 52% once the Hydro-Genie system was installed.
